How to Split a Story Into Short AI Video Scenes

AI video tools usually generate short clips, often only a few seconds each. A full story has to be cut into many small pieces, and how you cut it decides whether the final video feels smooth or confusing.

The core rule: one scene, one idea

Each clip should show one action or one moment. If a scene needs two big actions, split it into two scenes.

Step-by-step method

Step 1: Write the story in 6 to 10 plain sentences. Ignore style. Just list what happens.

Step 2: Mark the beats. Every story has a hook, a problem, a rising moment, a twist and an ending or cliffhanger. Mark them.

Step 3: Turn each sentence into a scene. One sentence becomes one clip. If a sentence contains two actions ("she opens the box and screams"), split it.

Step 4: Decide the shot for each scene. Choose close-ups for emotion, wide shots for location and medium shots for action.

Step 5: Add short dialogue only where it matters. Around 10 to 12 words per clip is a good limit.

Step 6: Keep continuity notes. Write down where each character stands, what they wear and what is in their hands, so the next scene starts from the same state.

Example

Story: A poor worker opens his lunch box and finds food he did not expect. The lady of the house watches from a distance, smiling.

Scenes:
1. Close-up of a woman placing a steel lunch box on a table, smiling quietly
2. Medium shot of a worker opening the lunch box at a construction site
3. Close-up of his surprised face
4. Wide shot of the worker eating while others work behind him
5. Close-up of the lady watching from a doorway, ending on a mysterious look

How many scenes do I need?

As a rough guide, 8 to 12 short clips make a reel of around 40 to 60 seconds, once you count trimming and transitions.

Mistakes to avoid

• Cramming a whole paragraph into one prompt
• Changing location or outfit without a reason
• Ending every clip in the same way, which makes the reel feel flat
• Forgetting a cliffhanger in the last scene, which is what makes people watch Part 2
